Open Social .. explained

There has been much discussion in the last few days about Google’s Open Social standard. For many, it’s hard to grasp the significance, or deduce what does it all mean for me and my brand.

I love Jeremiah Owyang’s post which explains the new standard in a simple to understand way, sectioned by What is it, Opportunities, Challenges and Next Steps.

I encourage everyone who has an interest in social networks to read his post.

Salesforce.com ask’s the audience

Salesforce.com have set up an ideas section within their site that runs like Digg. That is, the most popular ideas float to the top.
Software companies have been running user forums for many years, and typically the customers with the highest budgets got to dictate the priority of development releases. Whilst it is important to look after your best customers, this new site allows for anyone to suggest a new idea or enhancement for the product.

Perspective: One of the things Salesforce.com does well is service remote based sales people, and this is another example of ensuring that everyone is given a voice in the development of the product. Afterall, sometimes the best ideas come from places where you don’t normally look.

Magic Phone

This is quite an interesting video on what features pre-schoolers would incorporate into a “Magic Phone”.

Perspective: Ok, much of the suggestions are silly, perhaps even impossible, but that’s the whole idea. Kids don’t have the normal reality boundaries that we have as adults, and make a great source for creative thinking. Have you asked your kids what features they would build into your next product?
