Omo has combined GPS technology with a prize giveaway promotion as part of their “Try Something New With Omo” campaign. GPS devices are hidden in 50 detergent boxes throughout Brazil and the device is activate4d when the box is removed from the supermarket shelf.

The promotions agency then track the box to the consumer’s home, where winners receive a pocket video camera as well as an invitation for a day of outdoor fun at Unilever’s expense.  To help alleviate consumer concerns the promotions team can cause the GPS to start beeping – let’s hope they don’t think it’s a bomb ticking :)

CrunchPad – tablet pc

Looking like a big brother to the iPhone, the CrunchPad tablet PC  from Techcrunch is likely to shake up the tablet computing market.

At 18 mm thick, the tablet only works when connected to the internet.  The device takes advantage of clever touch protocols that make for efficient and pleasant consuming of content.  Rumoured to be priced at around US$300, the device could become a widely adopted method for reading online content.

Facebook now let you insert a widget of pages onto other sites such as blogs or websites.

I continue to read with interest the growing number of Augmented Reality applications that are starting to emerge, this one a pretty cool 3D Augemented Reality version of the humble business card.

The major limitation of the technology today is the lack of standard Augmented Reality readers, but work is being done to address this.

Tweetreel – Video from Iphone

Since Apple’s release of the iphone 3GS, there has been lots of discussion around the various tools and applications that will help deliver video content from the phones directly to social networks and to the web.

Techcrunch also reports of Facebook’s new iphone app which looks set to amplify the delivery of content from iphones to Facebook.

IBM’s Augmented Reality Mobile trial at Wimbledon

IBM has launched an Android based mobile app to “Augment” what is happening at Wimbledon. Taking a live feed from the handset’s camera, it superimposes content and data associated with various points of interest into that video stream. For example live scores, court information etc.

The widespread adoption of 3G and Smartphones has meant that the potential audience for leveraging location (using the phone’s GPS), and supplementing that with value added information is reaching a critical mass.
I think it makes sense to trial new technologies at these type of events.
